The Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) offers a pretty enticing proposal: if you put down impressive enough runs on enough venues, you can make it all the way to the “big leagues” of the Freeride World Tour (FWT).
But what does it actually take to get there? To find out, sit down with four of the athletes who competed in (one of whom won!) the first stop of this season’s IFSA Freeride World Tour Challenger series, which took place at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.
Britta Winans, Colton Shaff, Mia Winans, and Tyler Curle help peel back the curtain on the current freeride competition scene; how the skiing and riding have evolved, including the increasing influence from the freestyle side; the often-overlooked differences between the FWQ and FWT events; their personal favorite moments from this season + personal favorite riders; their mental approach to tackling the lines they ski; where they see the scene going in the future, and more.
